There were a lot of movies this past year about making movies. With Hugo, The Artist, and My Week with Marilyn all earning Oscar nominations it seemed more obvious than ever that people are still dazzled by the glitz and enchantment of old Hollywood. And none more-so than I. As someone fairly addicted to Turner Classic Movies I’ve established a lot of favorite actresses from times past and here are just a few of them, you know, the ones no one should do without.

Listed are the films you should watch, immediately. Perhaps not their most acclaimed films, thought mostly they are, but definitely my favorites.

We’ll start with the woman herself;

Marilyn Monroe

Essential Films: Some Like It Hot, Niagara

Vivien Leigh

Essential Films: Gone with the Wind, A Streetcar Named Desire

Myrna Loy

Essential Films: The Thin Man

Jean Arthur

Essential Films: Mr. Smith Goes to Washington

Katharine Hepburn

Essential Films: Bringing Up Baby, The Philadelphia Story, The African Queen

Ingrid Bergman

Essential Films: Casablanca, Notorious

Greta Garbo

Essential Films: Grand Hotel, Ninotchka

Grace Kelly

Essential Films: To Catch a Thief, Rear Window, The Country Girl

Gene Tierney

Essential Films: Leave Her to Heaven, The Razor’s Edge

Audrey Hepburn

Essential Films: Breakfast at Tiffany’s, My Fair Lady, Sabrina

And one not to Hollywood but impossible for me to leave off….

Anna Karina

Essential Films: Bande à part, Pierrot le Fou

About Lindsay
