Opposite Ewan McGregor and Colin Farrell in Woody Allen’s Cassandra’s Dream, as part of somewhat awkward threesome with Keira Knightley and Ralph Fiennes in The Duchess, as Julia Flyte in the 2008 motion picture version of Brideshead Revisited, and the upcoming Captain America movie. Also several television miniseries including The Prisoner, Pillars of the Earth, and Any Human Heart.
Why She’s Crushworthy:
Hayley Atwell is one of those English actresses that came out of nowhere and quietly are awesome. She’s played some fairly well known roles opposite some very well known co-stars and yet people still don’t know her name. Maybe because, with the exception of Cassandra’s Dream and her small but pivotal role in the remake of The Prisoner, everything she’s been in has been a costume drama. But when you look at her it’s hardly difficult to see why. She has a sort of ethereal other timely beauty.
And there’s the infamous incident where the director of Brideshead Revisited asked her to lose some weight to play Julia and Emma Thompson said she’d quit if Atwell lost a pound. Which just goes to show, sometimes we need a star who doesn’t look like she starves herself.
She’s probably about to explode given her leading role in Captain America: The First Avenger and that’s okay by me because she deserves more recognition.
