Weekly Crush

Gemma Arterton

How You Know Her:

As feisty redhead Bond girl Strawberry Fields in Quantum of Solace (for about five minutes), as a complete bastardization of Io in Clash of the Titans, as Jake Gyllenhaal’s love interest in Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, and as completely awesome Head Girl, Kelly Jones, in St Trinians and St Trinians II: The Legend of Fritton’s Gold.

Why She’s Crushworthy:

I have a habit of picking up random actors and following their careers just because they were in something I loved once. The thing I loved doesn’t even necessarily have to be good. I could make a case for St Trinians, but I wont bother, you can look it up for yourself. It’s silly, far fetched, and completely unrealistic. But, it’s also unabashed fun. While I’m pretty sure this ridiculous English film never received an American release (though you can now find it on DVD) it boasts some pretty big stars (Colin Firth, Rupert Everett in drag, Russell Brand if we’re considering him big…) having what appears to be the time of their lives. Gemma’s character is pretty central to the storyline, as Head Girl at the school for bad girls she pretty much oversees everything that goes on.

Of course, I’m not here to tote St Trinians. Gemma’s gotten much more popular since there, though far from a household name. Last year she was in two major big budget movies. Okay, so both those big budget movies sucked, but I’m not going to blame her for that. She’s pretty feisty in most of her roles, and always holds her own against the men, which is generally what makes a good girl crush for me. And right now it’s Ms. Arterton, with a bullet.
